What Is the Healing Process After Dental Implants?

Getting a dental implant is an important decision, as it can be a costly intervention, but one that fully restores the form and function of a missing tooth. The procedure involves surgery and a multi-stage healing process, so it’s normal to wonder what to expect from getting a dental implant

Here's an overlook of the healing process after getting dental implants.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a procedure meant to replace a missing tooth with a metal implant that is fixed into your jaw bone, then fitted with an artificial crown that functions and looks just like your original tooth.

Every case is different, as older gaps might require bone grafts if the bone tissue has resorbed. Each case is carefully assessed by Bryan Packard, DMD, and his team at Precision Dental, before deciding which treatment is best.

How Long Will It Take for the Implant to Heal?

The healing process is a multi-stage one. If you require bone grafts, you’ll first need to wait for the graft to be accepted by the body and bond with your jaw bone. This step generally lasts 1-2 months.

After this stage, the implant itself is placed, and you’ll have to wait for it to heal before getting a permanent crown attached. The initial healing of the implant is relatively quick, and a healthy patient will only take about a week to recover completely. But the permanent crown will only be put in after 4-6 months, as you have to allow the implant to heal completely and become a solid base for your new artificial tooth.

What to Expect During the Healing Process

Soreness and swelling are to be expected after getting a dental implant, but you have to monitor your condition and notify your doctor in case something seems wrong.

If you notice a worsening of your pain and state in the next few days after the implant, get a check-up. A mild fever is also to be expected, but it shouldn’t exceed 101.5.

Keep your discomfort and pain in control with the medication that was prescribed by your doctor and follow the care protocol that was explained to you. The better you follow the care instructions, the faster your implant will heal.
